DDAM for ABAQUS

A customized interactive graphical ABAQUS-based application to allow the DDAM practitioner to complete DDAM projects more effectively.

DDAM (Dynamic Design Analysis Method) is a regimented collection of response spectrum procedures that is used by the U.S. Navy to estimate the peak linear response of shipboard equipment when a ship is subjected to an underwater explosion. For example, Figure 1 shows an ABAQUS model of a pump mounted on a box beam and is typical of the type of shipboard equipment which require shock resistant design.

Using the DDAM procedure, a practitioner can evaluate the shock resistance of the equipment when subjected to single or multiple external shock spectra.

The DDAM procedure can be executed in ABAQUS using a new customized application called DDAM for ABAQUS. DDAM for ABAQUS provides DDAM-specific input forms through an interactive user interface (Figure 2) as well as specialized output data and tables (Figure 3) to allow the DDAM practitioner to complete DDAM projects more effectively.

Use of DDAM for ABAQUS consists of first using ABAQUS/Standard to compute the modal response of the equipment subjected to shock. Then, DDAM for ABAQUS is used to compute the shock response according to the DDAM procedure using the calculated modal response. For routine analysis, DDAM for ABAQUS can be executed in "batch" mode allowing a user to easily conduct multiple DDAM analyses on different models within a design environment.

DDAM for ABAQUS V1.2-1 is now available for download. Several bugs in DDAM for ABAQUS V1.1-5 have been fixed in DDAM for ABAQUS V1.2-1. Please note that DDAM for ABAQUS V1.2-1 requires ABAQUS V6.6-EF1 and is NOT compatible with ABAQUS V6.6. DDAM for ABAQUS does not require a separate license (although a seat of ABAQUS/CAE is used when DDAM for ABAQUS is executed) and is available for download without charge to ABAQUS users. Click here to download the software or go to the ABAQUS Answer on DDAM (requires a My ABAQUS login) for more information on obtaining the software. If you do not currently have ABAQUS Version 6.6-EF1, please contact your local ABAQUS office.
